Chongqing rewards travelers who accept its logic: streets stack, distances surprise, and the best moments often happen between metro exits and stair landings. This 3-day Chongqing itinerary is designed for foreign visitors who want iconic places and a sense of how locals move through the mountain city.
Who this itinerary is for
- First visit to Chongqing (2–4 nights in the city)
- Comfortable with moderate walking and stairs
- Want English-friendly logistics without missing local texture
If you prefer a private guide for Day 1 or a custom pace, see our City Day Tours.
Day 1 — Vertical city & first night views
Morning: Orient yourself
Start late enough to recover from arrival (especially after a long-haul flight). Use the metro with English signage; keep Google Maps as backup but rely on Amap International for accurate local routing.
Afternoon: Liziba + layered streets
Experience the “train through a building,” then walk cliffside connectors and sky bridges. Expect stairs — wear non-slip shoes. This is where Chongqing’s 8D magic city reputation becomes physical.
Evening: Hongyadong window
Many visitors arrive at Hongyadong at peak dinner rush and only see crowds. A calmer approach: late evening lighting, or a opposite-bank viewpoint on Nanbin Road for the full facade.
Day 2 — Heritage, cableway & hotpot
Morning: Old paths & quiet culture
Mix one heritage walk (Shibati / mountain alley fragments) with a calm cultural stop such as Luohan Temple — contrast against the commercial energy of Jiefangbei.
Afternoon: Yangtze River Cableway
Ride South → North when possible for stronger skyline framing. Avoid morning and evening commute peaks if you dislike queues. Pair with a riverside pause afterward.
Dinner: Hotpot with a strategy
Ask for yuan yang (dual broth) if spice is a concern. Tourist-facing restaurants often have English menus; local rooms reward a guide or clear spice negotiation. More detail will live in our upcoming hotpot guide — for now see FAQ · Local Tips.
Day 3 — Choose your ending
Option A: Nature day (Wulong or Dazu)
Full-day private car or high-speed rail logistics. Wulong for karst scale; Dazu for UNESCO stone art. Both are long days — start early. Outline product pages: Out of the City.
Option B: Soft city day
Nanshan overlooks, Ciqikou in the morning, or a “chill circuit” of tea and viewpoints if legs need recovery. Ideal before an evening departure.
Foreigner-focused tips
- Payments: Bind a foreign card to Alipay/WeChat before relying on street QR codes.
- Stairs: Budget energy; “short walks” can be vertical.
- Safety: Downtown night areas are generally busy and well-lit; use licensed taxis/DiDi late.
- Visa: Check current visa-free rules — summary in our Visa FAQ.
